I confess that this song is one of my favorite songs to sing. How else can we cry out for the Spirit, then through these lyrics:
“Come Thou Fount, Come Thou King
Come Thou precious Prince of Peace
Hear Your bride, to You we sing
Come Thou Fount of our blessings.”
I think it is safe to say that there are many times when we may feel embarrassed to say that we are needy. That being Christian means we’ve got to have it all together, know the score, keep up appearances. Inside, we’re dying-sad, desperate, and full of pain. That need to “look good and keep up a brave front” is keeping us from the very thing that we really need– the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.
The opposite is true-He said He came to heal those who were willing to admit their need, not act as if they didn’t need. Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink...To him who is thirsty I will give drink without cost from the spring of water of life.” (John 7:37; Revelation 21:6)
As we begin this season of Lent, maybe some of us are thirsty. Maybe some of us are in need of a spiritual down pour. As we gather over these next 6 weeks, let us pray for one another and the needs of our church...that the Holy Spirit would come and quench our thirst as only He can.
